Pulp and paper chemicals that influence paper properties like sizing, bleaching, and wet and dry tensile strength. For example, caustic soda is added to increase the pH in the pulping process of fibers. The higher pH of the paper fiber solution causes the fibers to smoothen and swell, which is important for the grinding process of fibers. AKD (alkyl ketene dimer) and ASA (alkenyl succinic anhydride) are used as sizing agents, whereas epichlorohydrin, melamine, urea formaldehyde and polyimines are used to retain tissue paper wetting strength.
